King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Princess Beatrix attended the presentation of the Four Freedom Awards on Thursday morning. The occasion took place in the Nieuwe Kerk in Middelburg in Zeeland. The prizes were presented by Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
This year the International Four Freedoms Award went to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. She is leader of the democratic movement in Belarus.
The four awards are presented annually to men, women and organizations committed to the ideals of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The US president gave his iconic ‘Four Freedoms speech’ in 1941. The awards are named after this speech.
After the ceremony, a group photo was taken of the winners with the royal couple and Princess Beatrix.
