From the world-famous diamond diadem Queen Elizabeth wore during her coronation to a necklace she once lent to granddaughter-in-law Catherine. Starting this weekend, the public at Buckingham Palace can take a look inside the British Queen’s treasury. NU.nl lists a few of these ‘treasures’.
By: Danja KoelemanThis piece of jewelry was made in 1820 by the jeweler Rundells. The diadem was originally intended for King George IV so that he could wear it during his coronation. It is made of silver, gold, diamonds and pearls.
–
The diadem has remained in the family ever since. Elizabeth wore it for the first time in 1952. In 1953 the piece really became known when the Queen wore it for the portrait made in honor of her coronation.
–
It seems to be Elizabeth’s favorite: the Ireland tiara. The piece of jewelry was made around 1890 for the bride-to-be, Princess Mary, who was to be married to future King Prince Albert Victor. He passed away a few weeks after the engagement was announced.
–
The tiara contains diamonds with silver and gold bezels. At first it also contained pearls, but Mary replaced them with diamonds. When her granddaughter Elizabeth got married in 1947, she received the diadem as a gift from her grandmother. Elizabeth therefore jokingly calls the piece of jewelry’granny’s tiara‘. She wore it regularly, for example in the portrait made of her on the occasion of her 25th birthday. In 2014, Elizabeth wore the tiara during the D-Day commemoration.

In addition to the Ireland tiara, Elizabeth was also given another very precious gift in honor of her marriage. It was a gift from the ruler of the Indian state of Hyderabad. He was considered one of the richest people in the world at the time, so he was also very generous. The nice thing was that he let the (then) princess choose her gift herself.
–
Elizabeth chose a platinum tiara and a matching necklace, studded with geometrically shaped diamonds. The jewelry has often been worn by the Queen and in 2014 the necklace was even lent to Catherine, the wife of Elizabeth’s grandson William. The piece of jewelry is said to have a value of about 71 million euros.

Where you can now win millions of euros in a lottery, things were very different in the nineteenth century. Then Queen Mary’s grandmother (wife of King George the fifth crowned in 1911) won a pair of emeralds thanks to her fate. They ended up with her brother’s mistress, but Mary decided to buy them back to keep them in the family.
–
Together with nine diamonds and brilliant cut diamonds – which, incidentally, were cut from one large diamond in Amsterdam – the emeralds have been incorporated into a necklace at Mary’s request. After her death in 1953, she left the necklace to granddaughter Elizabeth, who wore it regularly over the years.
