Longfonds launches platform for research into long-term consequences of corona | NOW

At the moment, much is still unclear about the long-term consequences that the coronavirus has for the lungs. To get a better picture of this, the Longfonds and the Long Alliance Nederland (LAN) are launching a platform on Thursday for people who have been seriously ill due to corona and who are still experiencing lung complaints.

Corona patients can visit the so-called Coronalongplein for advice and information about the course of their disease, but also for contact with other people who have had corona. People can also fill in a so-called ‘disease burden meter’, which should provide more insight into the severity of the complaints.

With the information that comes in via the platform, the organization hopes to get an idea of the long-term medical and psychosocial problems of corona. This image should be used for new scientific research.

Organizations argue for a good safety net

The organizations behind the platform argue for a good safety net, since there is a chance that after the corona crisis there will be many new lung patients.

According to Leon van den Toorn of the Dutch Association of Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis, it seems that especially patients who need to be ventilated in intensive care have a risk of permanent damage to the lung tissue.

“There may be inflammation that causes scar tissue on the lungs. This may mean that many more people with permanent lung problems will be added later,” says Van Toorn.
