The list of the world’s longest non-stop flights has so far included routes such as Doha – Auckland, Perth – London or Dubai – Auckland. Now there is a new long-distance record.
Longest non-stop flight between New York and Sydney
19 hours and 16 minutes: This is the time the Dreamliner needed for the 16,200 kilometers between New York and Sydney, as Qantas tweeted on Sunday. The Boeing 787-9 took off from the east coast of the USA on Friday evening (local time) and landed in Sydney on Sunday morning (local time). So far, travelers need around 22 hours and 20 minutes for the route and have a stopover in Los Angeles.
Many online congratulate the airline on its success, but there are also critical voices. Some wonder how such a long flight affects the health of passengers.
But many are also interested in the extent to which the flight with a full machine would have been feasible.
Test flight with 49 passengers
According to the airline, 49 passengers and crew members were on board during the test flight. The machine had been fully refueled before the record flight, the number of passengers and luggage was limited for this flight. A total of four pilots flew the machine on a precisely calculated route.
The aim of the record flight was to find out how health and well-being can be improved on long-haul flights. Jet lag should be minimized and the ideal rest and working times for the crew were investigated. Qantas is planning two more test flights of this kind by the end of the year.
