“I am delighted that this sophisticated drug tunnel has been discovered and will be disabled,” says a border guard. According to the American Customs and Border Protection the tunnel starts in an industrial area in the Mexican border town of Tijuana.
It would have been the longest illegal tunnel ever discovered. Not only is it long, the tunnel is also equipped with rails, air ventilation, electricity and a lift.
21 meters underground
According to an agent of a special police unit, the “complexity and length” of this specific tunnel show the “time-consuming effort that transnational criminal organizations undertake for smuggling across borders”.
No one has been arrested nor have any seizures been made. The authorities discovered the tunnel at the end of August after years of research. It is 21 meters underground, 1.7 meters high and 60 centimeters wide.
