After five Scots had used their penalty and four Serbs, including Ajax captain Dusan Tadic, had their sights set, Mitrovic missed the fifth and decisive Serbian penalty. It caused an explosion of joy among the Scots.
Hungary in a bizarre castle along Iceland
Hungary qualified for the European Championship after a hectic final phase at the expense of Iceland. In Budapest, the Hungarians made up a 1-0 deficit in the last minutes: 2-1.
Iceland’s first chance hit. A free kick, awarded by referee Björn Kuipers, was moderately shot in by Gylfi Sigurdsson, but goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi let the ball slip through his fingers.
Hungary then turned on and Dominik Szoboszlai was close to the equalizer twice with free kicks. The technically skilled Hungary was better after the break, but hardly had any chances.
A shot by Ádám Szalai went over through one leg in the final phase and the Hungarian European Championship dream seemed over. In the 88th minute, however, substitute Loïc Nego, a former French youth international who got Hungarian nationality last year, equalized with a lucky scramble goal, which raised Hungarian hopes again.
