“Long-Term Consequences of Omikron and Delta Variants: RIVM Study Sheds Light”

NOS News

One in ten people who have become infected with the omikron variant of the corona virus still suffer from complaints after three months, according to the lung covid study by the RIVM. In patients who were infected with the delta variant, that number is almost twice as high. Examples of long-term complaints as a result of the coronavirus are fatigue, shortness of breath, pain and memory problems.

The omikron variant, which appeared at the end of 2021, has a milder disease course than the delta variant. However, the omikron variant is more contagious, according to the RIVM. The total number of people with long-term complaints after an infection with the omikron variant may therefore be higher.

Questionnaire

With the lung covid study, RIVM is investigating how many people still have long-term health problems after being infected with the corona virus. Participants in the study will be asked to complete a questionnaire about their health five times in a year.

More than 4,100 of the participants were infected with the omikron variant between January and May 2022. And between July and December 2021, 6850 people were infected with the delta variant.
