NEW YORK — A Long Island man was found guilty of attempted murder on Tuesday after stabbing his wife multiple times in front of their two daughters, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney.

Evidence presented at trial showed that on the morning of June 14, 2023, the victim was sleeping in her daughters’ room after sharing that she wanted to end the marriage.

The defendant knocked on the door and told the victim that he wanted to talk in her bedroom, to which she refused.

The 46-year-old then forced his way into the daughters’ bedroom with a knife in his hand.

The defendant stabbed the girls’ mother three times with the kitchen knife, shouting that he would kill her and himself because she was ruining his family.

Her eldest daughter begged the defendant to stop and he told the children to go to another room. The defendant also took the victim’s phone so he couldn’t call 911.

Although the victim was losing consciousness due to blood loss, he managed to leave the house to seek help from his neighbor. When the defendant realized that the victim had left the house, he chased her and began kicking her in the face. Her neighbor called 911 after hearing the commotion and the defendant fled.

The Suffolk County Police Department K9 Unit located the defendant in the rear of a commercial building a short distance from the home.

The victim was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he underwent blood transfusions and surgery to repair injuries to his arm, hip and buttocks.

“This defendant attempted to kill his wife in front of their children after she told him she wanted a divorce,” said District Attorney Tierney. “Leaving a relationship can be the most dangerous time for a victim of domestic violence. I want victims of intimate partner violence to know that there is help available to them. Not only does my office have incredible crime victim advocates who will support victims through every step of a criminal process, but there are also agencies within Suffolk County, such as Long Island Against Domestic Violence and ECLI VIBES, that are available 24/7 to assist with safety planning, safe housing, food distribution and counseling services.”

On Monday, the defendant was convicted after a jury trial of the following charges:

  • One count of attempted second-degree murder
  • One count of assault in the first degree
  • Two counts of endangering the welfare of a child
  • One count of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree

The defendant is due back in court for sentencing on March 11, 2024. He faces up to 25 years in prison.
