Long-distance train from Switzerland evacuated in Memmingen because of combat knife

A drunk man with a combat knife triggered a major operation at Memmingen train station. A long-distance train from Zurich to Munich was stopped and evacuated there on Thursday evening.

Police cordon off Memmingen train station and evacuate train

Railway staff called the police about the 31-year-old drunk. The police then cordoned off Memmingen station. The train stopped and the approximately 200 passengers were asked to get off in Memmingen under the pretext of a technical defect. Panic among the passengers was thus avoided.

Arrested man had combat knives and other weapons

After getting off the train, federal police officers arrested the man. A breathalyzer test showed a reading of 1.7 per mille. According to police, in addition to the combat knife, he also had a one-hand knife with an eleven centimeter long blade, two cans of pepper spray, several pairs of shooting glasses and quartz sand gloves. On the way, he is said to have stolen a train conductor’s laptop.

Investigations also for armed robbery

It was initially unclear why the man boarded the train armed. He did not attack or threaten passengers, the federal police said. Investigations are underway for a violation of the weapons law and for armed robbery. An investigating judge ordered the 31-year-old to be remanded in custody on Friday.
