Long Covid Treatment and Research: Insights from Dutch Director Kuipers and Minister Kassa

‘Kuipers continues to maintain that as a post-covid patient you can go to the GP or specialist. But he probably says: I don’t know either,” says De Haen. The director believes that by collecting patient stories and knowledge in a treatment center, patients can be helped. ‘You also gain expertise by seeing patients, not just by doing research. Certain symptoms can already be controlled, because we know that treatment methods for similar diseases work.’

Kuipers told Kassa that it is still too early for reimbursement for treatments that have not been scientifically tested. There are still too many risks involved and more research is needed first. According to the outgoing minister, there are hospitals that have a budget to start experimental treatments, and patients can consult a GP, physiotherapist or a medical specialist, Kassa reports.

Much is still unclear about long Covid, also known as post-Covid syndrome. According to estimates, more than a million Dutch people would have suffered from corona infections for a longer period of time. A minority of these people have suffered such serious complaints from the infection that they dominate their lives. In October it was announced that researchers from various academic hospitals will conduct extensive research into the causes of long-term corona complaints in four research projects. The projects are financed by the Long Covid Foundation (SLC), which raised around 1.5 million euros in donations.
