Disc sheet is one of the leading long-Covid researchers. The professor said on Deutschlandfunk that many doctors are not well acquainted with the long-Covid clinical picture. That’s because it’s very complex. There are a multitude of symptoms and causes and not just one test that can be used to diagnose the disease. For doctors, this leads to a lot of uncertainty, emphasized the immunologist. Therefore, many patients currently have no correct diagnosis.

Immunologist: Genetic factors play a role

Disc sheet explained that when it comes to the risk of contracting long-Covid, it is known that genetic factors play a role, such as an immune deficiency and various previous illnesses. She criticized the fact that there were hardly any care structures for the seriously ill. Some patients don’t even get minimal therapy. The researcher called for a better focus on individual clinical pictures. Many more drugs will have to be tested in order to ultimately have effective therapies for all patients.

Federal Health Minister Lauterbach calls for more help for research and those affected

Federal Minister of Health Lauterbach also wants to improve the situation of those affected by long-Covid. The situation for many sick people is dramatic, said the SPD politician at an event organized by the publishing group “Die Zeit” in Berlin. Unfortunately, there is still no reliable therapy for many severe courses.

Specifically, Lauterbach suggested that around ten specialized centers nationwide develop and coordinate studies. Different approaches make sense, since people’s immune systems differ from one another. Funding for research is currently being discussed in the budget negotiations. In addition, his ministry wants to bundle the knowledge that already exists on a website where doctors and those affected can get information with reliable information.

Today the Health Committee of the Bundestag is dealing with the topic of Long-Covid.
