Long Confused, Scientists Finally Prove Water on Earth Turns Out to Come From the Sun

JAKARTA, HARIANHALUAN.COM – The latest research says that some air which is in Earth comes from the sun. The hydrogen ions from the sun’s particles create dust grains and are carried away by the asteroids that hit them Earth.

Director of the Center for Space Science and Technology at Curtin University, Professor Phil Bland said scientists have long been confused about the exact source air from Earth.

“The earth is very rich air compared to other planets in the Solar System, but all air Where did this come from,” said Bland as quoted from SCI News, Friday (12/10/2021).

The previous theory stated that air brought to Earth in the late stages of formation of a type c asteroid. However, testing through the asteroid’s isotopes showed air it does not match as found in Earth.

“Our research shows the solar wind creates air on the surface of small dust grains and air which are isotopically lighter these likely provide the remaining air on Earth,” he explained.

Using atomic probe tomography, Professor Bland and colleagues analyzed olivine grains from the near-Earth S-type asteroid Itokawa, samples of which were collected by JAXA’s Hayabusa spacecraft and returned to Earth in 2010.

Using advanced atomic probe tomography, scientists see the content air in the dust of the Itikowa asteroid. If enlarged, the content is equivalent to 20 liters air for every one cubic meter of stone.

“These are the kinds of measurements that would not be possible without this amazing technology,” said Professor Michelle Thompson, a researcher in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at Purdue University.

Researcher at the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences at the University of Glasgow, Dr. Luke Daly added, “This research not only gives scientists incredible insight into the source air Earth in the past, but can also help future space missions.

“How do astronauts get air enough, without carrying supplies, is one of the obstacles to future space exploration. With this research, astronauts may be able to process supplies air fresh straight from the dust on the surface of planets, like the Moon,” he said.
