Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Genetic and lifestyle factors are the two main causes diabetes type-2. However, recent studies have found new causes that are thought to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
A study published in the journal Diabetology found that the social component contributes to an increased risk of diabetes. In particular, loneliness was found to increase a person’s chances of developing type-2 diabetes.
In the study, researchers recruited 4 thousand healthy adults. Researchers asked how much loneliness the participants felt in terms of the presence of friends, feelings of exclusion, or feelings of isolation from other people.
Ten years later, 264 people or about 6.4 percent of participants developed type-2 diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes had a mean loneliness score of 1.42.
The result, researchers concluded that loneliness has a 46 percent greater risk of type 2 diabetes.
“This study shows a strong association between loneliness and type-2 diabetes later in life,” said lead study author Ruth Hackett, of the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience of King’s College London, UK. Everyday Health.
This study is the first study to show a link between loneliness and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. “Previous research has linked social isolation with risk of type 2 diabetes, but not specifically with loneliness,” said University College London behavioral expert Andrew Steptoe, who was not involved in the study.
Loneliness is a subjective experience of dissatisfaction with social relationships. However, it is not certain what makes these two things related to each other.
