The British minister for Northern Ireland, Brandon Lewis, plans to speak with Northern Irish political and religious leaders on Friday after another night of unrest in the area amid internal tensions exacerbated by Brexit and the pandemic.
After arriving in the British province on Thursday, Lewis said that in the coming days he would try to “facilitate a constructive debate on the best resolution” of the conflict, which threatens to spread between the Unionist-Protestant (loyal to the UK) and Republican communities. Catholics (supporters of the union with Ireland) engaged in a paramilitary war in the past.
