London Sets Omicron Spread As Major Incident

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Mayor London Sadiq Khan on Saturday (18/12) stated the spread of the Covid-19 variant Omicron in the British capital as a ‘major incident’.

Major incidents are defined as events with serious consequences that require special rules to be implemented. The regulation aims to help the government reduce service disruptions in the city.

Khan has mentioned a major incident before, namely on January 8 when he experienced a previous wave of the virus. But this order was canceled a month later as the number of cases died down.

“The surge in cases of the Omicron variant throughout our capital is very worrying, so we once again declare a major incident due to the threat of Covid-19 to our city,” he said. AFP.

“It is appropriate that key agencies in London can work together to minimize the impact on our city, including helping to protect vital vaccination programmes.”

Around 26,418 new Covid-19 cases were reported over the past 24 hours in London, the highest during the pandemic. Meanwhile there have been more than 65,000 Covid-19 cases in London over the past seven days.

The UK has recorded a record number of cases for three consecutive days in a week. On Saturday the number of new cases was 90,418.
