The charge is extremely problematic for London police. The police force was still busy repairing image damage as a result of the conviction of Wayne Couzens, the police officer who killed Sarah Everard sexually abused and murdered, to be minimized as much as possible.

Couzens, 48, was sentenced to life imprisonment last week after falsely arresting Everard on March 3, on the pretext that she had broken corona rules. He used his police pass and handcuffs to get her into his car.
Corps ‘to shame’
London Police Chief Cressida Dick said in the run-up to Couzens’ conviction that he had “disgraced” the force. The case caused a stir about the safety of women on the streets in Britain.
The police officer now accused of rape was arrested on Saturday and suspended the same day. Like Couzens, the now-raped officer worked for the London Police Department responsible for the security of parliament and diplomats.
Police chief Dick said yesterday that he was “deeply concerned” in response to the new charge.
