LONDON.- The British police have identified as Ali Harbi Ali the 25-year-old man who on Friday murdered Conservative deputy David Amess when he was serving his constituents in a church in Leigh-on-Sea, in eastern England, reports this Sunday the BBC.
The suspect, a British man of Somali origin, has been arrested under the Terrorism Act of 2000, as the agents consider that his attack could have had a “terrorist motivation”.
The London Metropolitan Police (Met), which has officially declared the event an “incident of terrorism”, will be able to interrogate the young man until October 22, after obtaining a judicial extension on Saturday.
The BBC explains that Ali Harbi Ali was referred a few years ago to the national program Prevent for the prevention of terrorism, to which people in danger of being radicalized are voluntarily sent.
However, the public channel clarifies that he spent little time there and was never part of any list of subjects of interest of the secret services.
As part of the investigation, the Police have carried out searches in three London homes and on Saturday an autopsy was carried out on the deceased, who died at the crime scene after receiving several stab wounds.
The British political class and the Muslim community have joined in rejecting the murder of Amess, 69, married with five children, who was much loved in his constituency for his support of local causes.
