Details: The Mayor of London had previously not supported the transfer of vehicles to Ukraine that did not meet ULEZ requirements, as he said it would not benefit Londoners environmentally, economically or socially.

However, after a media campaign and numerous appeals, Khan changed his mind and asked Transport Secretary Mark Harper to provide “the opportunity for Londoners and other citizens across the country to donate usable cars to Ukraine through a scrappage scheme.”

The letter to Harper, which the mayor of London wrote together with former defense minister Ben Wallace, says that the transfer of cars to Ukraine would be possible if the relevant national rules were changed.

ULEZ aims to clean up London’s air by requiring drivers of high-emitting vehicles in the city to pay a £12.50 charge. Londoners can receive up to £2,000 in compensation in exchange for scrapping their car if it fails to meet ULEZ emissions standards. As a rule, four-wheel drive cars and pickups are covered by the program.

“We hope you will work with us to enable Londoners and others across the country to get paid to take polluting vehicles off our city streets, while providing vital support to the people of Ukraine,” Khan and Wallace wrote. .

Earlier, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was Khan’s predecessor as mayor of London, called the refusal of the mayor of London to transfer cars to Ukraine “petty and ridiculous.”

“The Ukrainians are more than capable of solving their air quality problems themselves, they need help to defeat a threat that is much more dangerous, and that is President Putin. Khan’s actions seem extraordinary,” Johnson said.

Let us remind you: On December 16, Khan refused to hand over, at the request of Kyiv City Mayor Vitali Klitschko, cars that were donated by residents of the British capital as part of a program to combat harmful emissions.
