London – If Britain does not agree with the European Union on the shape of future relations, London is ready to replace close ties with Brussels with a free Australian-style partnership. According to Reuters, the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecký today. Australia has no general trade agreement with the EU, so the exchange of goods is usually governed by World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

Britain left the European bloc after difficult negotiations on 31 January. During the current transitional period, which expires at the end of this year, the country remains part of the EU’s single market and customs union. Negotiators are now discussing the terms of a free trade agreement. However, the views of both parties differ, with Britain striving for the greatest possible economic and political independence. Another round of talks, which will begin in the coming week, is set to bring the positions closer. But the time to reach an agreement is running out.

“(Johnson) said the United Kingdom would approach the negotiations constructively, but at the same time be prepared to leave the transitional period under Australian conditions if no agreement can be reached,” the British prime minister’s office said in a statement.

Australia has very loose trade relations with the Union. Although there are agreements for some categories of goods, most trade is governed by WTO rules.
