London Heathrow Airport, the most connected in the world

OAG, the world’s leading data platform for the global travel industry, published Megahubs 2024the definitive market ranking of the 50 most internationally connected airports in the world.

OAG Megahubs It analyses not only the total number of destinations served, but also the number of scheduled connections to and from international flights with the number of destinations served from the airport.

‘Connectivity continues to be rebuilt in a context where airlines and airports in different markets respond to high travel demand.’

London Heathrow (LHR) remains the world’s most connected international airport, having secured this coveted position last year.

The ranking reflects London-Heathrow’s (LHR) wide range of destinations and the number of potential connecting opportunities on the busiest day of the year for global aviation.

The recovery is also strong in the Asia-Pacific region, with Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Tokyo-Haneda (HND) moving up the rankings to No. 2 and No. 3 respectively.

Among key European hubs, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is ranked 4th and Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG) is ranked 7th. Outside Europe, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is ranked 6th, Istanbul Airport (IST) is ranked 8th, Dubai International Airport (DXB) is ranked 16th and El Dorado International Airport (BOG) is ranked 20th.

‘Connectivity continues to rebuild as airlines and airports across markets respond to high travel demand,’ said John Grant, chief analyst at OAG.

‘Despite unfolding geopolitical events, each new route creates new connectivity opportunities and demonstrates the importance of aviation to the global economy.’

OAG Megahubs is based on OAG flight data from the world’s 100 largest airports and 100 largest international airports, based on total scheduled seats for an entire year.

The data is taken from the busiest day in global aviation in the previous year (September 2023 to August 2024), which was Friday, August 2, 2024.
