London Fashion Week Bans Exotic Skins

London Fashion Week decided to ban the use of exotic skin in their shows, one of the directors of the British Fashion Council (BFC), the organization responsible for the event, announced this Friday.

So London is the first fashion capital to implement this ban.

“We no longer feature brands that use real fur or exotic fur in their collections, and we ask designers to respect these conditions if they want to participate.” at London Fashion Week,” said David Leigh Pemberton, head of policy and communications at the BFC. ., in a message published on the LinkedIn social network.

The use of skins and materials from exotic animals, such as crocodiles or snakes, has long been criticized by animal rights activists.

It should be noted that real fur has been absent from the London shows since 2018.

The PETA group praised the initiative, which it described on the X platform as “a big step forward” and urged Paris and Milan to follow London’s example.

During the last Paris Fashion Week, at the end of September, activists of this group temporarily stopped the Hermès show, which carried banners against the use of exotic leather.

The BFC is currently reconsidering its position on the use of feathers, Leigh Pemberton said.

“This work fits into the wider context of the fashion industry’s response to environmental and social concerns,” he said.
