The extradition process to Mexico against the former first lady of Veracruz, Karime Macías Tubilla, will not be resolved by the British justice before next January 10.
This was determined today by a judge of the Westminster Magistrates Court, who set that date to give the parties time to present the latest evidence that defines the future of the former first lady of the state.
The process was also postponed until next Monday, after the technical setback suffered this Thursday by the team that defends the ex-wife of the former governor of Veracruz, Javier Duarte.
For the third day of the process, Juan Ernesto Méndez, who was the United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel or degrading treatment or punishment from 2010 to 2016, was invited.
The hearing, which in principle should have lasted two and a half hours, began with problems of liaison with the witness, who had the intention of speaking in teleconference mode from New York.
Due to initial audio problems, he was asked to communicate by phone, but this did not solve the difficulties the judge had in hearing him clearly.
After several attempts and interruptions, the head of the Court agreed to postpone the intervention until Monday.
The deliberations should have concluded this Friday, according to the previously established calendar.
Before closing the hearing, the judge told Macias, who attended dressed in blue, not to forget the situation in which he finds himself, released on bail after depositing 150 thousand pounds sterling.
“His condition remains the same, I will not go into details about what will happen due to non-compliance or if he does not show up for the appointment,” the judge ruled.
Macías’s lawyers not only seek to stop the delivery to Mexican justice, they also aspire to obtain asylum for their client.
Macías, whose last known address was a luxurious condominium in the most exclusive neighborhood of the British capital, is claimed in Mexico for the construction of a network of front companies that were used to divert at least 112 million pesos from the public coffers of Veracruz .
The extradition request was activated in 2018 and its fate ended when it was located in London by Veracruz authorities. In October 2019, she was arrested by the London police in compliance with a red card issued by Interpol.
