Around 100 firefighters were mobilized on Saturday (17/8) to tackle a fire at Somerset House in central London.
In particular, as reported by the BBC, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said it sent crews after a call it received shortly before noon. No injuries have been reported, the Metropolitan Police said. LFB added that the cause of the fire is not yet known.
Somerset House is an arts venue and, on Saturday (17/8), was due to host a breakdancing event. Videos posted on social media showed gray smoke rising into the air both over the River Thames and over the nearby Waterloo Bridge. LFB said its crews are tackling the flames which are “in part of the roof of the building”.
Fifteen fire engines, including crews from Soho, Islington and surrounding fire stations are at the scene, the Fire Service added. In fact, two of the 32 meter high ladders of the Fire Service have been used as part of the operation to deal with the fire.
“Traffic in the surrounding area will be affected as fire crews operate,” the LFB said in a statement. Still, the Metropolitan Police said officers were called at 12.25pm [τοπική ώρα]. Roads have been closed and it is believed that no one is inside Somerset House.
