Over the past four days, fighters of the private military company “Wagner” have captured most of the eastern half of the city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region.
The front line now runs along the Bakhmutka River in the center of the city, the British Ministry of Defense reported on Twitter. It is noted that the armed forces of Ukraine continue to hold the western part of the city. The Ukrainian defenders in particular destroyed key bridges across the river, which runs from north to south through a strip of open space 200-800 m wide between the buildings.
According to British intelligence, because the Ukrainian army can fire from fortified buildings in the West, this area has become a war zone. According to the British Ministry of Defence, this could complicate the attempts of “Wagner” forces to continue their frontal advance in the West.
“Nevertheless, Ukrainian forces and their supply lines to the West remain vulnerable to Russian attempts to bypass defenders in the north and south,” it added.
