LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) – American athlete Erik Kynard will finally receive his gold medal in the high jump at the London 2012 Olympics after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Friday that it approved the redistribution of some results from that. Olympic joust for doping cases.
Kynard placed second with a 2.33-meter jump in London, behind Ivan Ukhov, who years later was shown to have participated in the state-backed doping program of Russian athletes.
Ukhov received a four-year suspension in 2019 from the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Last year, he appeared before the same court at an appeal hearing, but was unable to reverse the ruling.
The IOC board of directors approved on Friday the redistribution of the medals and the final results of five events of the Olympic Games, including the high jump of both branches.
Once Kynard is promoted to gold, the three athletes who received bronze silver in 2012 will earn silver medals: Derek Drouin from Canada, Robbie Grabarz from Great Britain and Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar. Barshim also tied for gold at the Tokyo Olympics in August.
The IOC also redistributed the bronze medal in the women’s high jump from a Russian competitor. Svetlana Shkolina was disqualified for doping and the Spanish Ruth Beitia will receive the bronze medal.
