Czech canoeist Martin Fuksa advanced from the 1000-meter races directly to the semifinals of the Olympic race.
Twenty-eight-year-old Martin Fuksa held the lead after the start, then dropped to third place, but in the final part he moved back into the lead and kept the victory in the finish. “But I saved myself quite a bit, so I knew I had (strength) until the finish. Then I tried to lift it slightly, I was always the first, so I thought that I would like to keep it and raise my confidence that I will reach first in the race, even if it doesn’t mean much. It’s just that I saved one ride, and that’s the most important thing, “said reigning European Champion Fuksa.
Unexpectedly, his main rival was Balázs Adolf from Hungary, who defended his direct promotion with him at the expense of the third German, Sebastian Brendel. The 33-year-old three-time Olympic champion, who dominated the track at the London and Rio Games, had to complete the quarterfinals, but managed to advance to the semifinals.
As expected, 22-year-old Petr Fuksa could not advance directly from the race when he was not good enough for the fastest Brazilian Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos and the Chinese Liu Chao. In the quarterfinals, he remained among the advancing pair in the first half of the track, but then he dropped to sixth place and it was clear that he would not advance to Saturday’s part of the Olympic program. In the end he managed to at least move to the fourth position, but he was almost five seconds behind the second Connor Fitzpatrick from Canada.
