Logan Gilbert pitched seven scoreless innings and Seattle defeated the visiting New York Mets 4-0 on Saturday night, the Mariners’ 13th major league shutout of the season.
Randy Arozarena and Justin Turner, both acquired at the trade deadline, went 2 for 3 with doubles for the Mariners, who won their third straight to remain tied with Houston atop the AL West. Arozarena scored twice and Turner had two RBIs.
The Mets were defeated for the second straight night at T-Mobile Park and fell a half-game behind Atlanta in the chase for the third and final wild-card spot in the NL playoffs.
Gilbert (7-8), who had lost all three of his starts since making the American League All-Star team — despite allowing just one earned run in two of them — allowed just three hits, two of them to Francisco Lindor. The right-hander walked one and struck out six.
Lindor led off the first inning with a single to left field, but the Mariners turned a spectacular double play to get out of the inning. J.D. Martinez grounded out of the middle, with second baseman Jorge Polanco making a diving stop. Polanco flipped the ball out of his glove to shortstop Leo Rivas, who made a bare-handed catch and stepped on the bag before throwing to first to get Martinez.
The Mets didn’t get another hit until Lindor singled up the middle with two outs in the sixth. Martinez led off the seventh with a single to center but was stranded at first when Gilbert struck out the next two batters and got a weak grounder to third.
Mets left-hander Sean Manaea (8-5), who pitched seven scoreless innings with double-digit strikeouts in each of his previous two starts, struggled with his control and lasted just three innings, throwing 85 pitches. Manaea allowed three runs and four hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
The Mariners scored three times in the bottom of the first inning. Victor Robles and Arozarena doubled down the left-field line, making it 1-0. With one out, Turner lined an RBI double off the right-field wall. One out later, Mitch Haniger singled up the middle to score Turner’s third run.
The Mariners scored a run off reliever Phil Maton in the seventh. Arozarena singled with one out to center and Cal Raleigh walked. Turner singled to left field to score Arozarena and make it 4-0.
