It has sanded in sun, names of mountain peaks, date, an eye and a Bethlehem star, according to Holdal.
The symbols have become a talking point among mountain people, and as a tour leader in the Lofoten hiking team, he experiences that many are dissatisfied with “art”.
– Many are of the same opinion, that it is terrible, according to him.

But it should turn out that it is not easy to catch the mysterious “artist” in the act.
– On one of the mountain peaks, the top name and date were engraved, and there is also a mountain book you can sign up for there. But then they had used the angle grinder instead of a pencil, Holdal says.
He discovered the cracks for the first time in 2017.
– The first was up on Vetten. There is a stone there called Finnkjerka, which is believed to be a former sacrificial site for Sami, he says.
One thing Holdal is sure of; the person (s) are accustomed to the mountains, but not locally known.
– They have sometimes missed top names. They have carved the wrong name on a peak, and then the name of the top they have carved into a mountain behind you, you could say, he says.
On the lower peaks, people would hear the angle grinder, so they probably work at night, he thinks.
– Some of the peaks are not so well known, and less people travel there, so they can work freely, Holdal says.

Fresh stone dust
He believes that making people aware of this will help end the “works of art”.
– After the case in Lofoten Post we have received several tips for the case, but without solid evidence it will be difficult, he says.
Already in 2017, tips came in about fresh stone dust from people who had been to Finnkjerka. Now Holdal has decided to go to the police and report the case.
– Ideally, we would have seen that there was an end to this. They could just as easily have taken a garbage bag up there, says Holdal – who also comes with a clear message:
– Lofoten will leave traces in you, you will not leave traces in Lofoten.

Since then
Heidi Kjærstad (40) from Ballstad, says Lofoten Post:
– One can not help but react when the mountains – which have been at peace since the ice age – are vandalized with an angle grinder. I think it’s cruel.
She has seen the symbols in several places in Lofoten.
– It is Vestvågøy that has got the fireplace. It looks absolutely awful. The incisions at Blåtinden in Slydalen are among the largest. Maybe 60-70 centimeters wide, Kjærstad estimates Lofoten Post.
