Lode Vereeck started his political career at Open VLD, but switched to Lijst Dedecker. Between 2009 and 2014 he was party leader in the Flemish Parliament for that party. He then returned to Open Vld and became a co-opted senator. In the local elections in October 2018, he became the party leader for Open Vld in his home municipality of Diepenbeek.
But in that year he was discredited after complaints about unacceptable behavior with students at Hasselt University. The case was eventually dropped by the court. But he was fired by the university and Vereeck was sidelined by his party Open VLD.
