Lockdown questionnaire: Michael Moratti: “Books are crisis-proof”

Publishing director Michael Moratti, as an incorrigible optimist, fell into a mood crisis as a result of the second lockdown. Above all, he wants: health.

What is your current state of mind?

Michael Moratti: Although I am an incorrigible optimist, the second lockdown gave me a mental crisis. The mood in the economy was just a little positive in order to attract attention when launching new publishing projects. Now the window is closed again.

What are you working on right now?

Moratti: In terms of publishing, I prepare the marketing for our novelties: “Baking Stories – Recipes from the Augsburger Land” and for the picture book “Brocki der kleine Berg” by Gabriele Mühlbauer. The baking book has over 100 great recipes from the district. “Brocki” will be a good mood book. As an author, despite the crisis, I continue to write and draw on the comic series “Brezi & Plunder” for a baker’s comic magazine and design characters for a historical comic. The history comic should go in the direction of the Asterix humor. But the project is not yet ready for a decision; I don’t know if I can do it the way I want it to.

Which renunciation now hurts the most?

Moratti: Canceled book presentations with an audience and the musical readings of my picture book “Das kleine Engele” together with the quartet aTunes. Together with the musicians and my Kamishibai (Japanese narrative theater), we always create a very Christmassy atmosphere in children and parents. That really hurts. Also the cancellation of the premiere of the Junge Theater
Augsburg
, which my picture book “The little angel and the weasel gang” staged for the stage, makes me sad. No Christmas this year with my niece and nephew
Spain
. And of course the coffee house or espresso bar as a place of inspiration – closed. And the indoor swimming pool as a very important place for me to balance sport.

What gives you hope?

Moratti: Books are the perfect companion when you have to spend more time at home than usual. The crisis confirms my conviction that books are crisis-proof. So, despite some setbacks, we continue to work highly motivated at the publishing house.

What do you wish for in 2021?

Moratti: Private: Health, everything else is replaceable. And as sure as many others: an effective and well-tolerated vaccine to counteract this natural disaster in slow motion. Also so that I can see my brother and his family again in Spain. Business: Good partners who courageously plan and implement with us for the time afterwards.

Your motto in life in the corona crisis?

Moratti: „Always look on the bright side of Life“.

Another short recommendation for others …

Moratti: Try to stay cool It will pass and then the hunger for culture can hardly be satisfied!
