More than 12 provinces are affected, as well as the capital Beijing
Hundreds of thousands of Chinese people were locked down today amid a wave of contagion in which the Delta variant spread across the country and reached the city of Wuhan, the first to be affected by COVID-19 at the start of the epidemic, AFP reported.
In the spring of 2020, China has practically dealt with the disease on its territory and life has largely returned to normal, although several outbreaks remain – sporadic and, at least so far, highly localized.
But after new cases were opened last month in Nanjing, the outbreak quickly spread. Today, China reported another 55 cases. At national level, at least 300 cases of transmission of the contagious Delta variant have been linked to this outbreak.
The outbreak is still limited compared to the numbers registered in other countries, but in China it is the largest in recent months. More than 12 provinces are affected, as well as the capital Beijing. Its residents were urged yesterday not to leave the city without good reason.
New cases have also been found on the tropical island of Hainan, which is very popular with tourists.
The city of Wuhan, which at the end of 2019 became the first place where cases of COVID were found, and imposed a strict lockdown on its residents, announced today seven confirmed cases, BTA reports.
Since May 2020, no cases have been reported in the city in which the virus has been transmitted across the country. The reported cases were of returnees from abroad. Fifty Chinese passengers repatriated from Afghanistan have tested positive since July.
Despite the vaccination, hundreds of thousands of Chinese people have been locked down, most of them in Nanjing and Beijing’s northern district.
In the central part of the country, the city of Zhuzhou ordered its 1.2 million residents to stay at home for 3 days to perform population tests, AFP notes.
