Austria will start a lockdown tomorrow for unvaccinated people. The measure affects millions of people who have not been vaccinated or not fully vaccinated. The vaccination rate in Austria is one of the lowest in the European Union at 65 percent.
The measure was taken after Chancellor Schallenberg’s emergency consultations with the government leaders of the nine federal states, because the infection figures are setting new records every day. Yesterday, 13,000 new infections were reported.
“Vaccination coverage needs to be increased, which is embarrassingly low,” Schallenberg said at a news conference. People who have not been vaccinated are only allowed outside in necessary cases, for example to go shopping.
The restrictions for unvaccinated people were already great in Austria. For them, the 3G rule applied to work and the 2G rule to public life. 2G means that only people who have been vaccinated or recently cured of the coronavirus have access. 3G also allows people with proof of a negative test to be admitted.
The aim of the measure is to increase vaccination readiness and to reduce the number of contacts in order to reduce the chance of spreading the coronavirus.
