The number of corona infections has been declining for a few days, but there is still a critical situation in the hospital. There are 100 corona patients in the hospital, 40 of whom are in intensive care. Nine patients from Curaçao have been admitted to the IC in Aruba. Normally, the CMC hospital in Curaçao has an IC department with sixteen beds. The number of deaths is now 78. This means that the number of corona deaths has tripled in the past three weeks.
Rhuggenaath indicated that the population should stay at home as much as possible in the coming weeks. For the rest of the month, people are only allowed to take to the streets two days a week for essentials. Everyone is also urged to register for vaccination. Some 67,000 people have already registered, more than 45,000 people have had their first vaccine. Of these, nearly 13,000 people have already had two vaccines, according to figures published Thursday.
Prepare to relax
In addition, according to the Prime Minister, Curaçao must prepare for the relaxation of the measures in the coming weeks. Not only because more commercial activities are then possible. Rhuggenaath also wants to organize activities related to promoting the health of the population, especially after a long lockdown.
During the press conference it was indicated that as a result of the lockdown, there is no more tourism on the island at all. KLM and TUI still fly, but on the flights of 14 April there were only 75 people in two planes together, says epidemiologist Izzy Gerstenbluth. This mainly concerns medical personnel and people who have an urgent reason to fly. If the lockdown is lifted, Curaçao hopes to be able to receive tourists again.
