TEMPO.CO, Bandung – Meteor Rain Eta Aquarid reaches its peak on 5-6 May 2021. Observers in Indonesia can witness this with special conditions. “As long as it’s not cloudy or rainy in time,” said an astronomer activist from the Southern Sky community, Avivah Yamani, Thursday, May 6, 2021.
According to Avivah, the peak time for meteor showers in Indonesia will begin at 01.21 WIB. That time was the time of publication astrological sign Aquarius to the east. From the location of the constellation will appear meteor flashes called Eta Aquarids.
Avivah advises observers to look for a location that is open and free of artificial light pollution in the east. The advantage in this way, observers can watch the Eta Aquarids meteor shower since it is still quite low on the horizon. “Or you can wait about 2 hours after the constellation Aquarius is published so that its height has reached 30 degrees and is high enough to be observed,” he said.
The crescent moon that rises at 00:48 WIB can have a light pollution effect even though it is not as big as when the Moon is Convex and Full Moon. From the Southern Sky page, it is estimated that every hour there will be 60 meteors, or on average every minute a meteor streaks. Its speed is around 66.9 kilometers per second.
The meteor shower can be witnessed until just before dawn. “Observation of the Aquarid meteor shower can be started a day before and a day after the maximum activity time,” said Avivah. The cause of the meteor shower is because the Earth’s movement around the sun crosses the rest of the comet 1P / Halley dust that is scattered in space.
Eta Aquarid Meteor Rain, is one of two meteor showers that occur when the Earth crosses the dust Comet Halley. Another meteor shower that also occurs when Earth crosses the trajectory of Halley’s comet is the Orionid meteor shower in October.
