The 1-0 loss away against Crystal Palace yesterday, Sunday, was Ralf Rangnick’s last match as interim coach at the club. The German did not manage to reverse the negative trend after Ole Gunnar Solskjær was fired and Manchester United ended up in sixth place in the Premier League table.
Now the Manchester Evening News reports on several events that have occurred in the team during the season. The local newspaper claims that Manchester United’s sporting management did not allow any signings in the January window, but after Mason Greenwood ended up in bad weather and was shut down, the opportunity opened to make a last-minute signing.
The newspaper writes that Manchester United’s scout department then proposed Dejan Kulusevski, 22, from Juventus as a potential replacement – but that Ralf Rangnick refused. The German was then critical of the fact that the Swede, as is well known, instead went to Tottenham where he has been successful during the spring, was presented as a proposal.
Kulusevski has previously confirmed that Manchester United had their eyes on him.
– I know that they were interested before I went to Juve. Then I have not thought about it, the 22-year-old then added The football channel.
There was thus no signing of a new right-hander for Ralf Rangnick. Anthony Elanga was given a chance to change things around. The 20-year-old played a total of 21 matches in the Premier League and made three appearances in the Champions League, which is said to have aroused internal criticism.
BUT claims that several players in United’s squad reacted to the amount of playing time Elanga received during the spring and found it “amazing” that he got to play as much as he got.
Internally, there must also have been a great deal of dissatisfaction among the players linked to Ralf Rangnick. According to the information, a player is said to have said, among other things, that he “does not care a shit” about the German advice after he considered that Rangnick “spoke to him as a child”.
Erik ten Hag has now taken over as the new head coach of Manchester United.
