During the last municipal council, a motion was passed unanimously to express the municipality’s categorical opposition to the project to establish a salmon breeding factory farm by Pure Salmon in Verdon-sur-Mer.
“This motion reflects the deep concerns of elected officials about the environmental, economic and social impacts that this project could have on our territory,” declared Françoise Fribourg, mayor of the Michelaise commune. The councilor then explained the risks for the territory. “This project envisages salmon farming of 10,000 tonnes per year. The figures are alarming: more than 30 tonnes of feed pellets per day, an estimated consumption of 1.3 million m3 of water per year (3,500 m³ per day), and an energy demand of 100 GWh/year , equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 44,000 French people! In addition, the stocking density of 70 kg/m3, well above recommendations, raises concerns about animal welfare. »
“High-risk testing ground”
The use of water recycling technology still seems experimental for a project of this scale, which increases the risk of disasters, mass mortality and pollution during breeding, and worries the elected officials of the coastal communities of the Gironde estuary. “Implementing such a project in a Natura 2000 zone, and in the heart of the Marine Natural Park, seems inconsiderate, thus transforming the estuary into a high-risk experimental ground. Furthermore, in a context of energy sobriety and water scarcity, this project goes against the recommendations of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). Moreover, the Pure Salmon project was abandoned in the town of Landacres (62), and a similar project was rejected by elected officials in Plouisy (22). »
Consequently, the town hall of Meschers-sur-Gironde, in collaboration with the Estuaire 2050 collective, is organizing a public information meeting on Friday November 17, at 6:30 p.m., at La Passerelle. Citizens, elected officials, institutions and representatives of the economic and associative fabric are invited to join Michelais elected officials to express their opposition to this project.
