Local celebrities Face Off Against Special Olympics Wildcats in Wood County

Annual Basketball Game Raises Awareness for Developmental disabilities

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green Community Center was filled with excitement Tuesday night as local celebrities traded their usual roles for basketball jerseys at the Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ sixth annual Celebrity Basketball Game. The event, a highlight of the year, featured 22 local figures, including mayors, meteorologists, and law enforcement officers, competing against the Special Olympics Wood County Wildcats.

The game served as the opening event for Developmental Disability Awareness Month, celebrated each March. The Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities uses the month to highlight the importance of inclusion and support for individuals with developmental disabilities. This annual event underscores the community’s commitment to fostering an environment of understanding and acceptance.

WTOL 11 Meteorologist Ryan Wichman was among the local personalities who participated, showcasing the community’s broad support for the cause. The annual game has become a beloved tradition, drawing meaningful attention and participation from across wood County. The presence of figures like Wichman helps to amplify the message of inclusion and support.

Charese Botjer, the board’s communications and community engagement manager, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, There are just so many people who are willing to come and spend the time with us to show us their support of developmental disabilities and help us raise awareness and recognition for those all throughout the county and all throughout the nation.

A Night of Fun and Fundraising

This year’s event included a new feature: a red carpet entrance for the celebrities, who were encouraged to dress in their best “black-tie affair” attire. each celebrity received a small golden award in recognition of their participation and support. This added a touch of glamour and excitement to the already popular event.

Beyond the game itself, the wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities organized a T-shirt sale, with all proceeds dedicated to purchasing new equipment, uniforms, and covering other facility costs for the Special Olympics athletes. This year’s T-shirt design was black, aligning with the black-tie theme of the evening. The board creates a new design each year, making the shirts a collector’s item for supporters. The funds raised directly benefit the athletes, providing them with the resources they need to excel.

In addition to the T-shirt sales, organizers collected non-perishable food items at the door as admission, further contributing to the community’s well-being. The combination of entertainment, fundraising, and community engagement made the event a resounding success. This multifaceted approach ensured that the event had a broad impact, benefiting both the Special Olympics athletes and the wider community.

Joy and Gratitude

Botjer, who has been with the board for almost three years, shared her personal connection to the event, noting the emotional impact of seeing the athletes’ joy. It’s a very big deal for our athletes. There’s a gym full of people in there that are smiling and laughing, she said.

She further expressed gratitude for the community’s support, adding, We are forever grateful for their [celebrities] support in coming out to raise awareness for us and just have a good time and smile and make the best of memories that they could possibly make with us. This sentiment reflects the deep recognition the board has for the community’s ongoing commitment to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities.

Looking Ahead

The Celebrity Basketball Game marks just the beginning of the Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ activities for Developmental Disability Awareness Month. The board has a full lineup of events planned throughout March, aimed at promoting inclusion, raising awareness, and celebrating the achievements of individuals with developmental disabilities.
