Thiruvananthapuram ∙ The UDF made enormous progress in local by-elections by winning 9 seats and retaining 6 seats. 7 seats were captured by LDF and 2 seats by BJP. The competition was for a total of 29 places.
The Congress with 6 seats doubled its tally to 12, while the Muslim League with one seat won 2 seats. The UDF has won a seat and is independent. With a single victory at Ernakulam Keerampara Panchayat’s Muttathukandam Ward, another panchayat administration passed into the hands of the UDF. Santi Jose of Congress won a coup against the left Independents and handed over the panchayat administration that was in the hands of the LDF to the UDF. With this, the members of the UDF became 7 in the governing body of 13 members.
LDF which had 18 seats was reduced to 12. CPM had 13 seats to 9. The BJP, which had 4 seats, lost 3 seats while capturing one from the CPM. Congress of Kerala (M) won the only seat lost to the UDF. CPM also captured a BJP seat.
