The local advisory board wants to separate car and bicycle traffic on Schloßstraße in the future. Residents should then park on the Breitenbach Bridge.
Frankfurt – Cycling on Schloßstraße should become safer. The Frankfurt Local Advisory Council 2 (Bockenheim, Kuhwald, Westend) has launched a joint motion by the Greens and the Left to eliminate sources of danger. The regulation that has been in force there since 2020, that cyclists drive in the middle of the street and are not allowed to be overtaken by cars, would thus become obsolete. The vote was preceded by a lengthy debate.
The reason for the application was an accident on Schloßstraße at the end of March. A car driver first overtook a cyclist in a traffic violation, then in a rage threw his e-bike onto the tram tracks and then hit the cyclist so that he was thrown over the windshield.

Cycle paths for Frankfurter Schloßstraße – parking spaces should give way to the cycle path
According to the will of the local council, cyclists and cars should no longer get in each other’s way on Schloßstraße. The stationary traffic on both sides of the road is to be given up in favor of a structurally separated cycle path that is consistently marked in red. In order to compensate for the loss, the committee is suggesting new parking spaces on the Breitenbachbrücke. According to estimates by the city, between 110 and 140 parking spaces could be set up there, according to the application.
In addition, the magistrate should approach the operators of the car park at Westbahnhof and the car park on Schloßstraße. They should offer reduced long-term parking rates for residents of Schloßstraße. For people with restricted mobility, the city should create disabled parking spaces in the side streets on parking spaces that are closest to Schloßstraße. The local advisory board demands that the measures should remain in place until the conversion of Schloßstraße planned for 2025. Then the majority of the lost parking spaces could be set up again.
Bicycle paths for Frankfurter Schloßstraße – cars press cyclists: inside massively
The incident in March may have been an isolated case, the statement said. However, the current regulation has not significantly improved the situation of cyclists on Schloßstraße. Cars are still harassing cyclists massively, said Katrin Haus (Greens). They would also be forced by honking and tailgating. Overtaking in violation of traffic regulations continues, leading to dangerous situations. According to Haus, many cyclists now avoid the road because it is too stressful for them there.
It is questionable whether the incident in March could be seen as an example of the problems on the street, Sophie Hartmann (FDP) pointed out. After all, it was not a normal accident and would have been conceivable elsewhere. Martin Völker (SPD) made a similar statement. The conflict says nothing about the security there. This is a matter of criminal law, not a violation of the Road Traffic Act. The current traffic management “provokes such accidents”, replied Annika Schipper (left).
Bicycle lanes for Frankfurt’s Schloßstraße – application passed against the votes of the SPD, CDU, FDP and BFF
Stephanie Kenedi (CDU) complained that not everyone could walk to the Breitenbach Bridge to park there. There were also many people living on Schloßstrasse who could not afford to pay for parking. The safety of cyclists is more important than parking, said Schipper. In addition, these did not disappear permanently.
The motion was passed against the votes of the SPD, CDU, FDP and BFF. A proposal by the BFF to have it checked whether the track bed of Schloßstraße can be leveled in the near future so that the route can also be used by motorized traffic and the previous lane can be used as a cycle path did not find a majority. In order to further facilitate the switch from car to bike, a map with the best routes was recently published for the Fechenheim North/Seckbach industrial park.
