The company – and this is not irrelevant in the classification – only had at its disposal the data that had been contracted through their service.

A city clearly stood out at the top. On average, every Monaco customer borrowed €18,504 from a bank.

This means that the per capita figure is about 48% higher than in Leipzig at the bottom. In Saxony’s most populous city, customers borrow an average of 12,469 euros.

“Consumers in Frankfurt am Main (16,851 euros) and Stuttgart (16,806 euros) take out relatively large amounts of credit. In Leipzig, Dresden and Münster, customers need the lowest amounts from the bank,” added the comparison portal in a press release.

If we take the national average, every registered borrower has a debt of 14,932 euros.

The top 10 debt cities are according to this analysis Monk, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Hamburg, BerlinBonn, Nuremberg, Colony, Dusseldorf and Duisburg.

According to the company, the amount of the loans is not random, but is linked to the respective salary level.

“High-income cities top the credit charts,” analyzes Dr. Stefan Eckhardt, Managing Director Loans at the comparison portal. “With a high income, borrowers can finance larger sums.”

However, presumably the general price level in the respective regions also contributes to the amount of credit.
