LNSO promises a diverse new season, which will be opened with the premiere of Linda Leiman’s work / Article / LSM.lv

The Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO) promises a diverse program for listeners in the new concert season, while the resident composer of the LNSO will be Linda Leimane this year, LNSO representatives informed. The orchestra is also preparing for work next year, when the doors of the Grand Guild will be closed for repairs – the Dailes Theater will become the home of the LNSO, but concerts will take place at the Latvian National Library and regional concert halls during this time.

On October 1, the Grand Guild will host the season-opening concert of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO), in which Daumants Liepiņš and the LNSO, conducted by their artistic director and chief conductor Andris Poga, will offer listeners music by Sergei Prokofiev, Alexander Scriabin and Linda Leiman.

“For the third year in a row, we will open the new season with the premiere of a new work by a Latvian composer. For the second season, the LNSO will have its own resident composer. Last season was Gundega Šmite, this season will be Linda Leimane, who has created a new work “Longing. Flashing. Bonding ”. I would also like to highlight the concert soloist – pianist Daumants Liepiņš, who has proven his talent and mastery many times not only in Latvia, but also internationally. Together we will play Sergei Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto. The second part of the concert will feature Alexander Scriabin’s Second Symphony, which is relatively rare on world concert stages. The LNSO played it several times in the post-war years, and it was probably the last time it was played in 1970 under Leonid Wigner. Scriabin’s symphonies have a very special color palette, and this is music that I think suits our orchestra very well, ”says Andris Poga, the LNSO’s artistic director and chief conductor.

Linda Leimane, the resident composer of the season, reveals that she has kept the cooperation with the LNSO a secret for a long time:

“I received an invitation to be a resident composer from Andris Poga a year ago, but everything took place in secret, and only a few days ago I was able to talk about it in public.

It is a great honor and joy. For the last six months, I have been working hard on the opening concert piece “Longing. Flashing. Bonding ”, but the idea came a year ago. We are in the process of rehearsal, and I hope that we are approaching the best sound of the composition. It should be noted that this is one of the most complex compositions I have written, it is full of nuances and details. But I am convinced that we will succeed. “

Pianist Daumants Liepiņš, on the other hand, calls the program of the opening concert challenging: “This is the second time I will cooperate with the LNSO. Prokofiev’s second piano concert is one of the most complex concerts from the pianist’s point of view, and I will play it for the first time. The process has been very exciting and I can’t just wait for the result. I hope it will be interesting for the listeners as well. ”

Due to the limit on the number of people in the concert halls, it will be possible to watch the season’s opening concert live for free.

On the day of the concert, a live link will be available on the LNSO website. The concert will also be broadcast live on Latvian Radio 3 “Klasika”.

Andris Poga says that the orchestra plans to offer listeners a diverse program throughout the new season: “Many exciting musical events are expected, and I would like to highlight two from the first half of the year. This year, the whole world of music celebrates the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven. In May, the closing concert of last season, led by the French maestro Jean-Claude Kazadesi, was planned in honor of this event, but due to the pandemic it was postponed. We are pleased to announce that this concert will take place on November 26 and without changes in the program – Beethoven’s First and Ninth Symphony will be performed. As usual, one of the brightest events of the season will be our New Year’s concerts, where this year we will cooperate with the youth choir “Kamēr…” and the audience’s favorite pianist Vestards Šimkas. “

LNSO director Indra Lukina says that another important event in the autumn concert program is the “Baltic Symphony Festival”: “This is our mission and vocation festival, which we are organizing for the fifth year and whose idea is to present the musical events of neighboring countries. This year’s festival will offer three events – two chamber concerts and a large symphony, where the Latvian audience will once again have the opportunity to meet with Estonian conductor Kristina Poska and Lithuanian pianist Luka Genusha, who will play solo in Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. ”

The concert of the Baltic Symphony Festival “Čurļonis un jazz”, which will take place at the Music House “Daile” and will be dedicated to the 145th anniversary of the Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantīns Čurļonis, will be unique and interesting. Jānis Rubiks, a participant of this program and one of the music arrangers, outlines the atypical structure of the concert: “Interesting cooperation between the representatives of academic and jazz music. The special guest of the concert will be pianist Roks Zubovs – Čurļonis’ grandson. The concert will also be enjoyable visually – let’s take as a basis the cycle of Čurlionis’ 12 paintings “Zodiac”. For each painting we have found an associative miniature of a small piano. In the concert we will hear both Roka Zubov and our own arrangements with jazz elements. ”

LNSO director Indra Lukina also outlined the activities of the LNSO at the time when the doors of the Grand Guild will be closed for repairs next year: “In a year we will leave the Grand Guild for two years.

We hope that the technical problems of the building, which have deteriorated over many years, will be solved during the renovation.

It will not make the hall bigger, but hopefully better for listeners and musicians. During the absence, our main home will be the Daile Theater, where a large lobby will be part of the orchestra’s rehearsals. Acoustic experts have recognized this place as meeting the specific sound requirements of a large symphony orchestra. We will not give concerts at the Daile Theater, because the large auditorium of the theater cannot be used for acoustic symphonic music concerts. We plan to organize concerts of children and youth as part of a smaller orchestra in the Ziedonis Hall of the National Library of Latvia, while we will organize full orchestra programs in cooperation with the wonderful concert halls in Rēzekne, Cēsis, Ventspils and Liepāja. We plan to play the concerts of the chamber music cycle in the Music House “Daile”. In order for the LNSO’s reliable listeners in Riga not to be forgotten, special public transport trips will be provided on Saturdays after concerts from Cēsis. ”
