We previously informed that LMT plans to gradually close the 3G network by 2025 in order to release frequencies for the current 5G network and expand the 4G network.
It seems that LMT has moved from words to actions and especially to these changes to the created website we can see that in the next few days the 3G network will be disconnected in the regions of Dobele (09.10.2023), Saldus (09.10.2023) and Kuldigas (16.10.2023). LMT explains that the 3G network will be switched off gradually and starting with those counties where 3G communications are used the least and at the same time where good 4G and 5G services are provided.
It looks like this website will publish information about when the 3G network will be switched off in other regions of Latvia.
As these changes most directly affect customer communication equipment, LMT offers the opportunity to find out whether they will work on 4G or 5G networks and continue to provide data communications. LMT also promises to consider each customer’s situation individually in case of problems. If we talk about phones, then voice communications as such and SMS will continue to work (the 2G network is not disabled), but there may be problems with data connections if the device does not support 4G or this network mode is not activated in the device settings. In any case, let’s think about what network devices we have and what settings they have. It is especially important to check the devices of our relatives so that they are not left without communication.
As for the shutdown of the 2G network, the decision on a specific shutdown date has not yet been made, but we can be sure that sooner or later it will happen in Latvia as well. It has not been heard when Bite and Tele2 plan to start disconnecting the 3G network in Latvia, but I will update this article as soon as I learn something more about these plans.
