The American singer Lizzo implies in a message on Instagram to stop making music, due to the large amount of criticism and nasty comments she receives. “Lies are constantly being spread about me and jokes are being made about me because of the way I look,” writes the Grammy-winning singer, “I QUIT“. The message comes unexpectedly, because the singer announced new music earlier this month.
Lizzo is popular for songs like About Damn Time in Rumorsand released the song last year Pink for the film’s soundtrack Barbie. The 35-year-old singer is very vocal about celebrating all body shapes in her music, but also beyond it. As a result, she has often been the victim of online hate on the internet. Lizzo turned the hate into a powerful brand by championing the body positivity movement and to work against it fat shaming: deliberately insulting or bullying fat people.
Last year, the singer threatened to quit music, due to a new wave of hate and criticism about her weight. There was also suspicion about her sincerity. Critics thought Lizzo refused to lose weight because it would be bad for her profile. The singer later became controversial when three former background dancers sued her for sexual misconduct and creating an unsafe work environment.
Lizzo immediately denied the allegations and also added in this message that she is done with her integrity and character being compromised by “people who don’t know me. I didn’t sign up for this.” Many fans and other celebrities responded to her statement with support.
