Lizarraga Otero denounces attempt to reform UAS statutes

Mexico City. The acting rector of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa (UAS), Robespierre Lizárraga Otero, appeared this morning at the National Palace to request, for the third time, the intervention of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in the face of “a new attempt by the state Congress to reform the Organic Law of that university.

Lizárrago Otero explained that there is a judicial resolution that prevents the Congress of Sinaloa from carrying out a reform to the UAS, “without prior consultation with students and teachers, which is not being respected.”

He stressed that “the reason for coming to the National Palace is to deliver a document to the President of the Republic, López Obrador, since the state congress is initiating legislative acts outside of what is established by the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, the General Law of Education, and obviously a judicial resolution that we have that prevents them from modifying the Organic Law of the university.

“This legislative process has two locks to be able to start, one, that it is something genuinely emerged from the university, that is to say there must be a consultation and second, there must be a positioning of the highest governing body, there have been two working tables with the Ministry of the Interior, one on March 16, and another on July 16, agreements have been made with the head of the local executive that have been fulfilled, but in this case, the local legislative power is the one that in some way intends to violate our autonomy.”

The acting rector of the UAS delivered a letter this morning at the National Palace, addressed to President López Obrador, through which he requests, once again, “your intervention in the conflict that exists between the powers of the state of Sinaloa and the UAS. I want to let you know that the state congress has begun the legislative process to reform the Organic Law of the UAS, a process that transgresses the provisions of the Magna Carta and the General Law of Higher Education.”

The General Directorate of Citizen Attention of the presidency of the republic, delivered a letter to the acting rector, Lizárraga Otero, in which it informs him that the head of the Federal Executive “committed to giving attention to all the petitions, proposals or complaints presented by citizens, has entrusted us with receiving their request and managing a response.”
