Britain’s former Prime Minister Liz Truss has established a new political movement which will ensure that the Tories turn even further to the right.

Truss’ time as Prime Minister came to an abrupt end after 49 days, when she was ousted by her own party. But she has by no means given up on politics and is still a source of concern for her successor Rishi Sunak. At a time when he is doing a lot to keep the party together, Truss may increase the division.

On Tuesday, she launched a new group in the Conservative Party called “Popular Conservatism” – or “PopCons”.

– Truss’s undermining of his successor is unusual, but not unprecedented, says political scientist Tim Bale at London’s Queen Mary University.

Truss’ initiative is supported by the party’s former deputy leader Lee Anderson and arch-liberal Jacob Rees-Mogg, who was one of the party’s most ardent Brexit supporters.

The aim is to ensure that the party program becomes even more right-wing on issues such as immigration and taxes.
