Former No. 3 House Republican Liz Cheney Calls Out Elise Stefanik for Deleting Statement on Capitol Attack
Former No. 3 House Republican Liz Cheney has brought attention to the removal of Rep. Elise Stefanik’s statement on the January 6 Capitol attack. Stefanik, the current House GOP Conference Chair, reportedly deleted the statement from her website. Cheney recirculated the statement on her social media platform, urging visibility on the issue.
Statement Deletion Sparks Controversy
On Tuesday, Cheney shared a link to Stefanik’s now-deleted statement about the January 6 attack on her social media account. The statement, which can no longer be found on Stefanik’s website, has been replaced by an “ERROR” message, raising questions about why it was removed.
Cheney revealed in a tweet on Saturday morning that she had been informed about Stefanik deleting her statement. The tweet also contained a screenshot of Stefanik’s original statement, which called for the prosecution of the January 6 perpetrators “to the fullest extent of the law.”
Stefanik’s Evolving Views
In her initial statement on the Capitol riot, Stefanik characterized the violence as “anti-American” and “tragic.” However, she has since altered her perspective on those who stormed the Capitol. During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” in early January, Stefanik expressed her concerns about the treatment of the January 6 hostages.
Cheney’s Condemnation of Stefanik
Liz Cheney, who played a leading role in investigating the Capitol attack, has been critical of Elise Stefanik’s actions pertaining to the incident. Cheney recently referred to Stefanik as a “total crackpot.” As a vocal critic of former President Trump and his allies who propagated false claims about the 2020 election, Cheney has denounced Stefanik’s labeling of the January 6 rioters and her characterization of them as “hostages.”
The differing views and actions of Cheney and Stefanik are indicative of the ideological divisions within the Republican Party.
