To feel as clean as possible, Tessa avoids activities that make her sweat. For freshening up, she uses wet wipes, deodorant and shaves regularly. “I don’t do much, which makes me really dirty because I can’t do it. Standing in the shower for more than five minutes trying not to pass out because I’m hyperventilating when the water hits me is not relaxing. self careexperience that it is for others.”

Hospitalization
Most people have never heard of a water allergy, including Tessa’s classmates in college. “People were deliberately trying to splash water on me or throwing ice cubes at me,” she says.
During the global pandemic, the twentysomething exchanged her student room for her parental home. She managed to keep her allergies under control by staying indoors most of the time, but she developed an intestinal disorder due to dehydration. This in turn caused medical problems and hospitalization.
Since her discharge from the hospital, Tessa has had to recuperate with physiotherapy. This is very expensive in the US, which means her family is now struggling with large debts. “We are struggling to pay my medical bills and make ends meet,” she shares, referencing her GoFundMe page. Nevertheless, the twenty-something is not going to give up. “I’m not getting any healthier, but I hope I can find some sense of normalcy in life.”
