Vitiligo is a condition that causes pigment cells to disappear from the skin and hair. “In Amsterdam I do a lot to mask it,” says Mark, who tries to protect himself as best as possible against UV rays under the Malaysian sun. “With powder, with ointment, with camouflage cream. Here I just have it, so everyone sees it too.”
He admits that he had ‘quite a problem’ with the ‘weird spots on his face’, but that his friend Boaz has no problem with it. “He said, ‘Gosh, I didn’t choose who I love either. If this is who you are, then that’s fine with me.'”
The Grinder, Mark’s nickname because of his distinctive voice, screams when he quotes his partner’s answer to the question of whether he would still love him if he also became ‘very fat’. “‘Yes, Mark, I’m certainly not going to divorce you because you’re getting unpalatably fat. You just won’t have sex anymore.'”
