Living with Alopecia: Ieva’s Journey and Struggles with Hair Loss

Only a month and a half has passed since Ieva found out about her diagnosis, so she is still learning to live with it. “I’m still learning how to wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and say to myself – wow, you’re beautiful! Even though you don’t have hair.”

Previously, the woman had long black hair, which she liked very much.

“Honestly, I don’t know if I will be able to live with it. It’s hard, I have to cry. I want to say: how should I live, how should I work, get to know people and whether anyone will need me like that at all,” said Ieva.

The woman realized the seriousness of the problem when she saw loose hair in the sink and on her lap. “I knew it wasn’t going to go away and I had to go to the doctor. And when a colleague showed me that I didn’t have most of the hair on the back of my head, I went to the doctor the very next day.”

At the moment, the fitness trainer mostly wears a wig every day, but trains with a hat on her head. However, she admits that she is slowly approaching the moment when she will also be able to come to the gym without a hat.

Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss. It usually starts with a few hairless patches on the scalp. Also, there is a possibility of losing hair anywhere on the body. Some people lose their eyebrows or eyelashes. Due to an autoimmune disease, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks a part of its own body – organs or cells. In alopecia, the immune system attacks the hair follicles.

Ieva also published the story about hair loss in photo and video format on her “Instagram” account:
