Living near main roads increases the chances of contracting a “skin disease”

A recent medical study linked the chances of developing eczema with living in areas close to main roads and streets.

The study, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, said that those who live in homes far from the main roads have fewer chances of developing eczema compared to those who live in homes close to the main streets.

The study reviewed data on 14,000 people in Denver, Colorado, over a 13-year period, according to the UBI news agency.

Those with eczema were compared to an equal size control group of patients without the condition.

The researchers calculated the distance from their homes to a road with a traffic volume of more than 10,000 vehicles per day.

The study found that the risk of developing eczema in children who lived 1,000 meters or more from a main road had a 27 percent lower risk of developing eczema compared to children who lived 500 meters away from a main road.

Commenting on the study, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology issued a statement saying: “Although there is a link between eczema and housing near major roads, it is necessary to conduct more research to find out the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in this connection.”
